The project is primarily aimed at those with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and other disadvantaged groups in the community. It will centre around a series of music workshops that will take place in a local recording studio.
Participants will learn about the history and origins of popular music through regular tutorials and group discussions. The groups will learn about different elements of composition involving song writing and playing musical instruments and will be encouraged to think about creating lyrics to fit a particular style of song.
With the beauty of hindsight, through the use of tutorials and musical examples, exciting new music will be created influenced by musical genres of the past.
Towards the end of the project there will be an opportunity for participants to showcase their creative talents by taking part in two live shows at a prestigious venue in Leeds. The sessions will be opened up to individuals aged 16 plus from varying backgrounds who may be facing unemployment, criminal activity or homelessness. Sessions will be supported by local bands, professional organisations and volunteers from within the community.
By the end of the project participants will have improved confidence and self esteem, improved communication skills, increased social inclusion and reduced isolation from collaborating to write, play and record music culminating in the two live musical events. Awareness of and interaction with those with AS will be raised and could initiate a social enterprise for a community recording studio.
