WestCountry Projects
ITV Westcountry transmits to people living in towns and villages throughout Devon, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, and parts of Dorset and Somerset.
Over the past five years of the People’s Millions competition some great projects have won funding in our region, including community gardens, a skate park, a community transport project and many more besides.

Region Projects
- Berrow's Empowering Play Area (BEPA)
- The project involves the development of an adventure area, including removal of redundant equipment, the installation of new equipment and landscaping. A specialist advisor will be consulted on developing the area and the upgraded facility will be advertised to attract new users. The applicant states that the project will transform an old-fashioned play area into a safe, modern and challenging play environment that is open to all.
- Newton Poppleford PFA Refurbishment
- Our community project is to replace outdated and condemned play equipment, sited on the playing fields, with modern, fun and age grouped equipment. As well as being fun and encouraging exercise it will be safe and usable by both abled and disabled members of our village community. Currently many of our children choose not use the equipment but go to villages where the play equipment is more interesting, unfortunately this option is only open to families who have transport. If you vote for our project then you will know that our community will be heavily involved in selecting the equipment and supplier. The local school through its School Council is involved in making our film, as will the youth club, parent and the mother and toddler groups. We are a village 3 miles from Sidmouth and unless we attract young families and keep our school full we will end up as another Devon retirement village. Nobody in Newton Poppleford wants this to happen. If anybody wants to know more about our project or our village then please call or email me. My phone number is 01395 567430 or my mobile is 07802 755411 and my email address is d.zirker@btinternet.com
- Safety, Mobility and Adventure Project
- The project is to purchase a Minibus and Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) to provide the young people of Plymouth with an opportunity to participate in adventurous activities. The RIB will be used as a Safety Boat so that the activities such as canoeing, kayaking, dinghy sailing, wind surfing and rowing can be done safely. The minibus will replace the current old bus which is fast becoming unsafe. A minibus is essential as it is used to transport young people to the water and adventure training areas. Winning the Peoples Millions would make such a huge difference as both these items would be well beyond our reach with our current funding. These young people are a credit to their City and the Nation as a whole and deserve to Win!
- Portland's Living Quarry
- This is a small project with the potential to have a huge impact. If we win the vote we will be able to transform a rundown building in the centre of Portland, replace a leaking roof, widen doorways, install a ramp and provide equipment for an arts workshop for the whole community to use and enjoy. The project is at the heart of a community living in one of the most intensively quarried areas in the UK. Skills are in decline, the older generation has no place to share their knowledge, youth lack opportunities to develop their abilities and the community, a shared space to work. Inspired by quarrying families dating back 700 years, and 250 million years of evidence of life in stone, this creative workspace will also include an outdoor carving terrace, overlooking the quarry and will show sustainable new uses of waste stone from the quarrying industry.
- Woodland Park & Play Area
- The project will purchase children's play equipment which can be used by children aged 3 to 15 including disabled children. The group purchased an area of land adjoining the village hall, which they then hired a contractor to landscape, make tarmac access paths and create three separate areas suitable for children of all ages and abilities. One area is designated for wheeled sports, the second a grass area for ball games and the third area is soft based, this is where they would like to install the play equipment.Visit www.itsmymarket.com/harrowbarrow-and-metherell-community-park
