STV (North) Projects

The STV North region goes from the Shetland Isles down to the Howe of Fife on the east coast and Fort William on the west coast, encompassing Skye and the Western Isles.

Over the past five years of the People’s Millions competition we have seen some great projects in the region. Previous winners include projects to create an Alice in Wonderland garden, replace seating in a school theatre, provide every child in the Highland Council area with waterproof suits and many more.

Region Projects

Mill Theatre Extension
This project will improve and update the entrance to a community theatre to make it more welcoming with an improved layout and with better disabled access in Thurso, Caithness. A new toilet will be installed for the actors to use and a dressing area for disabled people will be created making the building more appropriate for use. “The Mill Theatre is such a great place,” says the players representative Donna. “Thurso Players put on dramas and music events for the community in the theatre and the annual pantomime is hugely popular: but it is an old building and the entrance is draughty, dingy and squashed. We’d love to have a warm, welcoming covered entrance for our audiences. At the top of the extension a much needed toilet could be added to the dressing room. I can tell you, when you’re waiting to go on stage and you’re nervous and you need the loo, it’s tough to have to wait until the audience is seated and then dash down two flights of stairs to the only toilet on the ground floor!” The Mill Theatre is run entirely by volunteers and is self-funded. It is the only theatre north of Inverness. Thurso Players have planned this project for years: this could be the year they realise the dream. With your help, they can do it!
Elgin Athletic Arena
This project will upgrade the facilities of Elgin Amateur Athletic Club to bring it up to the standard of an athletics stadium and address current issues around health and safety. It will encourage new members and improve the health and fitness of those in the area by providing better and safer opportunities to take part in a variety of sporting activities.
Broadford MUGA Project
This project aims to build an all-weather Multi-Use Games Area on the playing field next to the local primary school, village hall and children's playpark in Broadford on the Isle of Skye. Local sports groups and teams will use it to practice and host tournaments, families and children will use it to meet and play ball games and the school will use it for playtime and PE activities.
Craigellachie Playpark
The project will develop an unused grass area into a play park for the benefit of the local community of Craigellachie, Banffshire. This will provide interactive play and healthy active lifestyle opportunies for local and visiting children and families.
Scary Monsters!
CREATIVITY IS FOR EVERYONE! To draw-out, discover and engage the inherent creativity in all people in Moray through the creation of environmental art. The influence of public art in community is priceless & immeasurable. In 2007 Moray Art Centre was asked by local community organisation, Forres In Bloom, to help them ‘beautify’ an old and shabby disused building in Forres. The end result was a building completely transformed. A year later the mural has not been damaged by graffiti or any other kind of vandalism which effects towns across the UK. It is this type of community project which can help create stronger communities and help to make areas cleaner, safer and greener places to live and visit. Inspired by this project and by other famous large public art projects we want to create similar spaces in Moray, by bringing community and artists together to create gigantic public environmental art. In doing so we hope to heighten awareness, question people’s assumptions, inspire people, transform a landscape and express community values. The art work could be: Giant beasts and monsters, made of wire-mesh structures that will be filled with leaf compost and be planted; Life size murals which depict thoughts and symbols of people of the area; Large environmental kinetic art works which move with the wind or even images projected on to walls. AIMS & OBJECTIVES Public art helps define an entire community’s identity and reveal the unique character of a specific neighborhood. By getting people involved in their local community and the spaces they live in, this project will have the power to: • Rejuvenate their public spaces • Introduce people to art • Express a positive sense of identity and values • Helps green spaces thrive. • Gives civic and corporate pride in citizenship
Dance to the Beat!
The project aims to improve health and fitness throughout Shetland by setting up a wide range of dance and excercise programmes using a state of the art wireless dance mat gaming system. This easily transportable system, suitable for all ages and abilities will allow provision of activities throughout Shetland's isolated rural communities.
Installation of Floodlights
Thank you everyone for your support. There have been a lot of good projects this week are we are delighted to have been awarded the grant. Thank you! The project will install floodlighting for 3 of the 6 tennis courts at Montrose Tennis Club. Floodlights will enhance the clubs facilities, development and programme offering extended playing and coaching to the local community of all ages and abilities in Montrose and surrounding areas. Please see our photo gallery for pictures of the club and some of our activities in tennis and the community.
