The Pedro Youth Club is one of London’s oldest youth clubs formed in 1929 and is a registered charity.
The Club is situated on the edge of the Olympic site and boasts London’s newest Amateur Bosing Club under the direction of James Cook MBE ( a former European Middleweight Champion).
The aim of the Pedro Music Project is to set up a vocal academy/choir and orchestra primarily for young people in the local community so they can learn how to express themselves and develop their talent through music.
The Project will also allow the Club’s very own Dance Troupe “Mezmerise” to expand and have more rehearsal sessions.
The young people in the Choir and Orchestra will use the Club premises and recording studio to teach music, musical instruments and singing as well as utilise people within the community to assist others in performing and recording music.
The Choir and Vocal Academy will be led by Hildea Campbell (a professional singer and entertainer). The Club and our young people are very fortunate to have the assistance of Hildea whose philosophy is very simple in that as she states ” I can teach any body to sing as everybody can sing”.
A valuable part of our Vocal Academy are our rappers, singers and spitters all of whom are drawn from the local area and most of whom have been coming to the Club since they were children
Our Orchestra is based on the Brazilian Samba Band idea as we consider this to be a fun and enjoyable way into music and once again the Club is fortunate in that we have the assistance of Chris Franck of the Zeep Band to give the young people instruction and inspiration to develop their muscial talents initially with drums and guitars and later into other instruments.
Thc Club will develop its in house recording studio so that the young people whether they are singing ,playing or both can make their own CD immediately under professional instruction.
Marc Brown who runs the Shed Project @ Camden has kindly agreed to run the Sound Studio and also train our young people as Sound Engineers and Producers.
The Project will also allow the Club to develop its own Internet based radio station Radio Pedro
which will reinforce the musical work done in the Club by allowing our young people to record and publicly play their musical work…ie a 14 yr old can have his/her own radio show!
We would like to put on record here our gratitude to Alestir Waller @ Media for All who donated the radio equipment.
A continued sense of achievement and progress is important for young people so every month
at the Pedro Club we will hold a small concert for the family and friends of the young people in the Project and every 6mths we will take a public venue and hold a larger concert.
This will allow our performers to review themselves and each other and continue to improve and will also increase the family involvement and support that they receive.
We are now part of the Save Hackney Empire Campaign so some of our public concerts will assist that worthwhile cause.
Thank you
