This project will renovate and equip a derelict building at Heathlands Farm near Carlisle to become a social enterprise. The new farm shop and cafe would be run by people with disabilities and aims to become a vital resource for the local community and contribute to healthy eating and lifestyles. It willl also promote social inclusion and support disabled people to become more independent, enhance their personal and social development as well as gain confidence. Qualifications will also be offered as well as training in other skills to increase employability. In conjuction with the Extended Schools Initiative The Heathlands Project will also provide a programme of visits for 2000 local school children next year with the aim of educating about conservation, wildlife, the lifecycle of plants/vegetables and will promote social inclusion with adult learning and other disabilities to remove social barriers. The visits will include a farm trail, pond dipping, watching birds and wildlife with cctv, art projects using recycled materials and other educational activities.
