The 8 – 80+ Project has a winning formula for the local community.

For the project to succeed we require some serious funding.
The public can help with this project by voting for it on the “Peoples Millions” programme on ITV on the 24th November 2009, between 9.00 in the morning and midnight.

With your help the 8 – 80+ Project will deliver:

a healthy activity for the target age group.
an intergenerational sporting activity.
a mixed gender sport.
an activity shared with able body and disabled.
team development and bonding.
development of improver’s beyond the beginner stage.
social activities both summer and winter.

Targeting Good Physical & Mental Health.
The project is structured to develop a healthy exercise within the limits of the individual. The nature of the activity also requires strategy, planning and anticipation with the sport often being referred to as “Chess on Ice”.

The Age Group.
Children from as young as 8 can curl along with the 80 year old. For this purpose we are targeting the full cover of ages to encourage an understanding of other generations and develop social interaction between young and old. All coaching staff have disclosure clearance and the ice rink has a child protection policy with a named official.

Mixed Gender.
There is healthy competition between the male and female teams as well as the very social mixed events. All clubs are now mixed gender and the coaching staff are experienced in dealing with both male and female beginners.

Disabled Welcome.
The Border Ice rink cater for disabilities to most levels including the partial sighted and are equipped with access ramps, disabled toilets and wheelchair lift to the upper floor. Assistance with transport costs for wheelchair users is available within the project.
There exists a very active wheelchair club at the rink and experienced coaches are trained in dealing with wheelchair and stick delivery methods.

Team Building and Bonding.
As the project progresses the individuals become teams and the development of team building never ends as each person finds their level depending on, in most cases, their desire to advance. The teams may consist of a mixture of young, old, able body, disabled, male or female!

Improver’s and Progression.
We never think of there being an end, but just another level. The project will also cater for the curler who wants to progress or improve their slide, delivery or strategy of the game.

The Social Aspect.
Like so many sports, there is a social side to it all. Curling is no different and there is a comfortable lounge with a viewing area over the ice to watch the games below. Curling is a seasonal sport and during the closed season there are social gatherings and activities to keep everyone in touch.

What will be Funded?
The project will fund the ice to allow the target groups to attend the Border Ice Rink and take part in the project.
Equipment for training and for use by the project.
Video training equipment for beginners and improvers

Coaches expenses and training costs for the coaches.
Training aids and video monitoring equipment do develop your skills.

Remember the project can only be a reality with the funding of the Peoples Millions grant!!!
That means we need to win the voting stage on 24th November

The number to phone to place your vote(s) is:

?????? The number will be displayed here from 9.00am on the day of voting – 24th November 2009
