The employment situation at the moment in the UK is not easy; people are finding it difficult to get jobs. Some of us are more disadvantaged than others – unemployment amongst Deaf people is triple the average which means it is three times harder for Deaf people to find work.

The Courthouse Restaurant project is run by East Lancashire Deaf Society (ELDS). We aim to reach out to the local Deaf community and run the restaurant as a way of integrating Deaf people, as well as educating the public on Deaf issues. This is very much a long term project which will go beyond the Jubilee where Deaf people can gain qualifications and experience who will also pass on their skills to other Deaf people. This project is about giving Deaf people a positive chance in life.

ELDS is a Deaf organisation led by Deaf people and has a strong ethos of social inclusion of Deaf people.

Good Luck tonight!!! Congratulations to Doug Alker who is a remarkable man, doing a remarkable job for deaf people through ELDS. If there was an award for persistence paying off, Doug and the team at ELDS should get it for the last 10 years work.
