The project will involve the building and fitting of a narrow boat, to be called the Hugh Henshall, with a new hybrid electric drive, which will provide local people with access to the waterways. The project will be fully accessible and enable people with disabilities, families, school children and older people to enjoy the boat and increase inter-generational learning. An electro-hydraulic system will enable any user to steer the boat from anywhere within it, regardless of disability. It will be based at Kiveton Park. It is supported by Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Wales High School.
Some of the aims of the first year of the project are
- To provide access to the Chesterfield Canal for 200 people with mobility impairments
- To run a RYA or NCBA Helmspersons Certificate course for 10 adult volunteers from the local community
- To run a RYA or NCBA Helmspersons Certificate course for 20 young people from Wales High School
- To develop with Wales High School a pupil engagement enterprise programme based around the business of running it as a trip boat.
