Hafan - the memory cafe and other stuff!

If the Hafan memory cafe project and other stuff ran by Hafan Dementia Care comes out on top, they will improve the health and wellbeing of people suffering from dementia, their carers’ and families in Ammanford, Crosshands and Llandeilo, providing a valuable service to vulnerable and isolated people in a disadvantaged rural community. It will refurbish the Day Centre to create a Memory Cafe and Drop-In Information Centre, providing an improved and relaxed social environment to tackle isolation and offer support for beneficiaries whilst serving the wider community. Allowing new carers to be able to talk to other carers to share their worries and fears.

When carers and clients with Dementia are given a diagnosis of Dementia they need the opportunity to talk to someone with skills and knowledge in Dementia Care to reassure that it is not the end of life but the beginning of a different life, which with support will enable carers to have time for themselves and people with Dementia to use the skills they still have and to mantain their dignity and self esteem.

The Memory Cafe will complete the Dementia pathway provided by having Dementia care. We have Hafan Gobaith the daycentre, Hafan Croeso which provides Respite Care and 3 permanent beds. The volunteers and staff rotate between the different services, this means clients are in familiar surroundings, they know staff and volunteers which is most important in Dementia care. They are cared for in small homely environments.

The alterations at Dementia Cafe will enable us to work with mid and west wales, life skills to provide services such as footcare, aromatherapy, pensions advice and many other services.

Revenue from the cafe and letting out space will help the group to become self sufficient and not have to rely on grants.
