Blooming Beds and Bees

The project will carry out a programme of education and outreach in the local community focusing on learning about the environment and growing edible plants that also support much needed bee colonies. Workshops will connect local schools, communities and faithgroups within the 4km foraging distance from the bee-hive at Living Under One Sun’s community allotment. We will celebrate the honey harvest in the summer with an outdoor, family-focused, Blooming Beds and Bees event that will inspire & raise awareness of the wonder that is bees. It will bring together local people from diverse communities, many with a rich heritage of plant-cultivating & bee-keeping to share!

  • Living Under One Sun wins the BTCV Award for 'Community group of the year' 2011. Leyla Laksari shows us around the project and explains why LUOS is so important for Haringey.
  • Vote for 'Blooming Beds & Bees' to win the following for our community: The opportunity for 20 local people to train as bee keepers & experience looking after a bee hive. 10 schools and 20 community groups within a 4km radius (the distance a bee can fly from the Living Under One Sun's allotment hive), will be supported to grow edible flowers and learn more about the life of bees. Living Under One Sun will be able to purchase equipment for extracting and bottling honey & wax products, for use by bee-keepers in this area. Living Under One Sun will organise a 'Growing Competition' focusing on displays of bee friendly plants. Tottenham's alternative to the Chelsea flower show! A free family fun outdoor summer event on Tottenham marshes in July 2012. Exhibiting the Growing Competition finalists to inspire us all. There will be displays & demonstrations of all you could ever want to know about bees & bee keeping!

Brilliant project -- plays a very important role in this densely-built up, economically deprived area -- bringing people together to share gardening and food growing cultures and skills, and deepening understanding about both people and nature!

LUOS can't fail to captivate and inspire anyone who visits their site. I've never left without a huge smile on my face and fresh vegetables in my packpack. Good luck tonight!

@Living Under One Sun allotment - picked some beetroots on Thursday, 23rd June and planted some more... The beetroots were massive...

Haringey 4020 – Bringing together residents, businesses, social enterprises, charities and community groups across Haringey to help to create a better future for everyone living and working in the borough.

It was inspired by the passion of local residents who convinced Haringey Council to join ‘Get Serious about CO2’ (external link) and adopt an ambitious target to reduce CO2 emissions in the borough 40% by 2020.

In 2009, Haringey was one of the first local authorities to commit to reducing borough wide CO2 emissions by 40%. This pledge is important to us and to show our commitment we have set a target to reduce CO2 emissions from our own buildings 40% by 2015, 5 years ahead of the borough wide target.

To help us to achieve our borough-wide target we will:

– set up a Carbon Commission of Carbon experts – develop an Action Plan
